Once upon a time...
Historical fiction novels may not begin with those words, yet most of us enjoy them just as much as we once did the tales of royalty that enthralled us as children. Granted, since royal historical fiction is normally based on fact (however loosely), it rarely ends with "...happily ever after" - but it is about kings and queens (mistresses, too)... and castles... and kingdoms... and we're still enthralled!
Popularized as a genre in the 1800s, historical fiction books particularly appealed to women readers - and they still remain top selling books for women. The facts may be the same, but there's always a new way to tell a story and the contributions of today's gifted authors are often spellbinding. We invite you to pay homage to their talent by reading their books; simply click a country tab above to find books women love about famous queens, kings, and mistresses, historical romance books, historical mysteries... the latest and best historical fiction awaits you!

Our Selection of
Historical Fiction Books for Women
The books we feature have been released (or re-released) within the last 3 years, and are loosely classified as historical fiction. Occasionally, a non-fiction book may also be offered.
Central characters in the majority, but not all, of the books are royal queens, kings, mistresses, or members of their court.
Settings are usually historically correct, based on the author's research of the period.
Story content can vary widely in the delicate bal-ance of fact and fiction. Some authors will adhere to known events and/or characters, fictionalizing only where necessary to tell the story. Others may exercise more artistic license - either by em-bellishing facts, or adding characters or circum-stances that never actually existed. This is often the case with historical romance (always popular women's books) and historical mystery novels.
Time periods represented are pre-20th Century (with the exception of a dual time period storyline), and only European countries are the stage.
